Some good folks in Franklin County invited me to be the artist in residence this year and so I spent the first week of February 2017 there to learn, observe and to paint. It was a special trip full of surprises and mysteries: hot tin roofs, piles of oyster shells and miles of beautiful empty beaches. There were stories of the Georgia Pacific company managing the forests, the making of turpentine in the old days and the life of the shrimpers in fisheries.
It is a lively community with a bright future but times are changing. Some of the buildings left behind silently suggest many stories still needing to be told.
I tried to capture the flavor of the place. One example is “Hot Tin Roof” painted on a roadside in East Point. (9×12)

The hot tin roof is on top of the old Flowers and Sons Seafood Inc. in Eastpoint Florida. I love my hometown. Bruford and Annie Flowers alongside their son Dennis Flowers ran the family business.
